Bartolomeu Dias was
the first European to set foot on South African soil at Mossel bay
in 1488. The museum grounds are situated at the very site where he
came ashore and made contact with the indigenous people. The Dias
Museum Complex encompasses a wealth of places of historical interest,
the most famous is the Old Post Office Tree and the fountain where
Dias found fresh water. In the Maritime Museum you may embark a full
size replica of the caravel used by Dias more than 500 years ago.
Also visit the Hartenbos museum about the "Afrikaner Great Trek" into the hinterland and the Washing Machine and Iron Museum also in Hartenbos.
